The Allegheny
River Project recognizes that the
river fronts of the city are undervalued and under used. With a marina
below, shops and restaurants in the middle, and living spaces on the
top, the Allegheny
River Project proposes a new way of living in Pittsburgh's
urban environment. Existing office buildings from the 1980's reside
on the river's edge, necessitating the placement of the project in front
of them to gain access to downtown views and waterfront accessibility.
The project's position is also very precise in terms of the structure
of the surrounding city. The district of the Allegheny City is structured
in a 9 square grid. However, the only edge that was never defined, exists
in the river. The Allegheny
River Project
is positioned precisely on the edge of this grid, defining the edge
and corner of the grid in the river. The form of the building relates
to the three majestic yellow bridges that provide access to the project
as well as technological issues such as daylighting and natural ventilation.
