the
NEOBAUHAUS DESK
The design of the
Neobauhaus Desk takes into consideration some of the ideals of
the Bauhaus, [geometry, function, materials] but in a way that is appropriate
to today. The design relies on an aluminum structural spine that provides
the main support for the long span of the desk top. Twenty-four inch
wide pieces of cherry cantilever off of this structure. This aluminum
structure allows the wood to be extremely thin, almost half an inch
thick, making the top of the desk to appear to float between the two
legs. The legs are massive to contrast the lightness of the top.
One major technical issue to overcome in the design of the Neobauhaus
Desk was the expansion of the wood in the desk top. To solve
this problem, slots were milled into the aluminum cross members allowing
the cantilevered aluminum structure to move as the wood expands and
contracts.
The whole Neobauhaus
Desk is able
to be disassembled or assembled in about 20 minutes.
