During a two week model building section, the
students learned about model building through the creation of a series
of architectural models. The students became familiar with basic materials
and methods of model building as well as a number of important architectural
issues [scale, composition, accessibility, etc.]
The students were asked to choose any two pairs
of conceptual conditions listed below and build models to represent
each pair of ideas. Initially, the students explored two pairs of concepts
through a series of study models, first in bristol board, then in chipboard.
For the final basswood model each student chose one pair of concepts
to explore. The concepts the students chose from included:
interior/exterior communal/personal
light/dark
solid/void
movement/rest
vertical/horizontal
static/dynamic
skin/structure
The students were asked to design and model the space within a 24’ x
24’ x 24’ framework first at a scale of 1/4” = 1’, then at 1/2" = 1'
for the final model. These dimensions were a maximum: the students were
not encouraged to fill the space completely. The components of the space
included a stair, a ramp, at least one wall, and horizontal floor planes
as necessary.
